Effective December 19, 2008, the Federal government passed a law concerning pool and spa safety called the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act: All commercial pools and spas must have been brought into compliance with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act in order to be open to the public. “In addition to a compliant drain cover, such additional devices or systems include a safety vacuum release system (SVRS), or suction limiting vent system, or gravity drainage system or automatic pump shutoff system or drain disablement or other system determined by the CPSC to be equally effective in preventing suction or entrapment.”
While residential pools and spas have as yetremained exempt from compliance, it is my recommendation that replacing any outdated equipment, drains or equalizer covers will ensure the safety of your residential pool also.
